After buying CoverScout and only having a little more than 500 albums with art I was pretty worried. As it is, I leave it on one of my screens and try to add a cover or more in each sitting. So far, I’m at 3091 without art, but 1006 with art. Handy little feature grabbed all the art stashed in the iTunes Album artwork folders and that probably got me another few hundred. I think the easy part is over and now it’s just a lot of the built in search.
$20 well spent, so far.

On Mr. Steele’s tip, I went ahead and bought CoverScout. Pretty slick so far. I’m sure it will get even more powerful if I crack open the docs.
One interesting feature tells you how many albums you have, and how many have art. 3115 albums, but only 530 with art. Yikes. I knew it was going to be bad….

So I’ve got an iTunes library hitting better than 17,000 tracks. There’s podcasts, videos, movies, and a ton of music without album art. A lot of the tracks that are an hour or more in length. And yeah, iTunes doesn’t (or will never) have artwork for most of this stuff.
I finally decided it was worth trying to take some advantage of Cover Flow, but with only about half the library having any art, it’s not too pretty.
I found art to work with a group of nearly 500 tracks. iTunes is still chewing away after more than an hour. At least it’s a step in making the iTunes display prettier.
It’ll be interesting to see if I make it all the way through my library….

So I got one of the new 80 gig models and thought I would give a try to letting the iPod sync with my playlists automatically. Big mistake.
I’m on my 4th or 5th iPod (starting with a 10 gig click-wheel), and I’ve always done the manage playlists manually and never really thought twice about it. Now I know why I’ve gone that route.
My set up has my home machine with my library (upwards of 220 gigs) and podcast subscriptions, and I sync from there. I take my iPod with me to work, then plug it into my laptop at work. Going the automatic way was a surprise when I plugged it into the laptop and everything was locked and grayed out. Hmm, I don’t like this.
Back home and now going the manual route. At least I have all these playlists to copy to the iPod. Damn, it’s a pain to go one by one and copy the playlists to the iPod. Too bad you can’t grab more than one playlist at a time.
Once I finish with the music, I’ve got to get all those episodes of Arrested Development on here.
I will leave all my podcasts in the auto updating set up, though. It’s worked well in the past. Granted these are video podcasts, and the Gillmor Gang (still listening and fast forwarding through the ads). The bulk of my audio podcasts still come in via NetNewsWire, then to iTunes, and finally into a manually updated podcast playlist on the iPod.

I’ve been subscribed to Scar Stuff for quite a while watching the old records that are getting ripped and posted. It wasn’t until I saw the post listing all the previous content did it really set in. What a great collection.
There are scary tunes, novelty tunes, and just wierdness from the past, but then I came across some vintage Naked Raygun “Live At The VFW#18 in KC, MO Aug 11, 1984” and Butthole Surfers “Live At The VFW#18 in KC, MO Oct 31, 1984“.
“Captured by my portable tape recorder in 1984″
Nice.

Wall Street Journal story works it’s way to Slashdot:
“As a retailer I’m going to be holding on desperately for any compelling physical product,” said Eric Levin, who owns two independent stores called Criminal Records in the Atlanta area. “So the introduction of a new format…is cause for excitement.” Mr. Levin is also president of the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, a trade association with 30 members, who he said are also pleased by the prospect of the new format.
Props to E. and all the fine folks at Criminal Records.

A while back I posted about a thread of folks getting XM for $77 once the free trial ran out. Well, my trial ended last night on the way home. After 3 months, I’m sold. $12.95/month isn’t horrible, but why not try for the saver plan first.
800-892-5400 and mentioned something along the lines of “the dealer mentioned a $77 special once the trial is over” was enough to get me the special.
Bottom line, it doesn’t hurt to ask. All they could have said was nope, and I probably would have went for the normal price.
Update – and now tuned on to XM Online via a slick little widget.

Let me preface this by saying my crate is a stack about 6 inches deep.
Over the years I’ve sold most of all the great import cd’s I had from working in record stores, but I have kept a short stack of vinyl. Just a few things that I couldn’t just get rid of. Vintage Def Jam. In this case circa 1985 – DJ004 – MCA and Burzootie. I don’t think I’ve even listened to it, at least not in the last 20 years.
From Beastiemania.com write up:
The Adam “MCA” Yauch – Jay “Burzootie” Burnett collaboration known as the Drum Machine 12” (DJ004) was released exclusively on vinyl in 1985. Over the years it has remained one of the rarest and most sought after Def Jam releases.
A nice surprise.

My new Element has the free XM trial and I love it. I’m now a little over a month in and pretty well hooked. I’ve read about waiting until the end of the trial and holding out for a reduced price.
$77.00 (or starting here) looks to be the spot folks are hitting. I can live with that.

Many months later I’ve finally started to get myself set up with last.fm. I’ve been checking out Chad’s charts for quite some time, just never got around to setting it all up.
Well, I’m now set up. My charts. Recent tracks.
