Slingbox edging towards the Mac…

September 28th, 2006

We’re getting closer and closer everyday.

New Slingbox supports Mac OS X, Symbian – but where’s the software?:

It’s time to check in again on the Slingbox’s journey to Mac OS X, as Dave Zatz pinged us with some more details and a purty picture he took off one of the new Slingbox AV models at Best Buy. Turns out there are going to be three new models – Tuner, AV and Pro. Tuner ($150) goes the bare bones route for regular cable or antenna, AV ($180)can interact with a set top box, and Pro ($250) is the One to Rule Them All[TM] with support for multiple feeds and that hot new ‘HD’ thing the internets keep talking about.

The interesting thing, as you can see, is that these new models list support for Mac OS X (as well as Symbian) right on the box, but as we learned a couple weeks ago, the company is still in the middle of a private beta of their SlingPlayer software for the Mac – nothing is public yet. So for now, it sounds like they’re cranking out these boxes without actually having any way for John Doe Mac user to work with them, though after an update over on Dave Zatz’s original story, we might have a public beta of the software very soon.

If any of you rush out to grab one of these, feel free to let us know if there are some wires mixed here and Mac OS X software actually is shipping in the box. Read

Pre-travel media planning

September 18th, 2006

I’ve got one of the new, larger iPods coming in the next few days and a trip to the west coast next week, which means I’ll have some time on my hands in the air and airports, as long as portable media devices are still allowed.

It seems that about a week before a trip, I start thinking about the media for the trip. I’m about half way through with Season 1 of Lost (on the tube) but I also have them ripped in mp4 for the PSP or iPod, so I can keep going. Add to that the first two seasons of Arrested Development ripped and ready. That’s a decent back up plan.

A while ago I stumbled onto ReplayToGo and failed to get it working. There’s probably something important in the guide that I didn’t read. ReplayToGo works with MPEG Streamclip, which in itself is nice to have.

After getting the files in the right locations and working, the flow is pretty nice.

Now to automate the download and convert process with the two. If I remember, this where I ended last time. Turned out to be a permissions issue.

Success. This is getting better and better.

I prefer video on the PSP (and the battery life), but I’ll have the storage of the iPod. If they could only talk to each other…..

Airport wifi – free for me

August 17th, 2006

One of the benefits with the job come the tools to make connectivity easier.

At Hartsfield well in advance of my departure time, it sure is nice to open up the PB, jump onto the wifi (without the 24 hour fee), catch up on some feeds and watch this week’s Brotherhood.

Where’s the native Sling client for the Mac?? It”s been done on a Macbook Pro.
