Flickrfan and appleTV

December 30th, 2007

Following along with a number of the Dave Winer followers, I grabbed his Flickrfan app and installed it. One difference for me, I’m feeding the images to an appleTV connected to a 46″ panel, and not via a Macmini.

Michael Markman has great instructions which had me up and running in just a few short minutes.

One think I noticed right off with the installer, is that it’s really Dave’s OPML editor. I expected the installer to be flickrfan.dmg, as opposed to opml.dmg. No sweat, though. It’s a beta.

Seems that Dave wrote this with the Macmini as the main output device, but maybe it’s really better suited for an appleTV? On the appleTV, each feed is it’s own slideshow, not just one. But we’ll see what else Dave has in mind.

Since I’m not shooting tons of amazing pictures (unlike Josh Hallet’s images) I added a feed from the graffiti tag. A little over 24 hours later, I have nearly 500 images, consuming nearly 500 MB. I changed my maximum number of images to keep to 500 so hopefully that keeps things in check. I think the default was a larger number.

A couple things I’d like to see added:

An option to only display horizontal images, useful when subscribed to a tag with mixed orientation. Not a deal killer, but I’d like to not see curtains on vertical images.

The url or user name displayed (not just in the Events page), again useful when not subscribed to your own images.

And there’s a lively discussion about feeds, enclosures, and rights. I was wondering many of the same things when I saw the AP photo feed. Not a copyright anywhere on the images, and they now live on my computer.

So yeah, flickrfan is worth a shot if you’ve got the Mac household/products. It is nice to have a steady flow of new images into the screensaver.

I wish I could subscribe to a set in flickr. Dan May’s “100 Squares” would be fantastic.

[update] – trying Last.fm and Flickrfan integration. Cheers to Joe Lazarus. This was enough to give it a shot:

All the photos include Creative Commons licenses and an attribution link back to the Flickr photo page, meaning I’m respecting the photographers’ permissions (something that I believe is currently missing from Dave’s standard feeds).

iPhone and iTunes urls

July 11th, 2007

It sure would be nice if when you clicked that called out to the iTunes music store, the iPhone would remember the link (like – http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=88395834) and next time you sync’d the iPhone with iTunes, you would be asked if you wanted to subscribe (or even better, buy).

Instead you get a nice message that says “Please use iTunes on your computer to access the iTunes Store.”

Mobile iTunes can’t be far off.

Appletv missing feature – iPod access?

April 2nd, 2007

After playing with the Appletv for a little over a week, I have to say that I’m moderately impressed. There’s hacks abound, hard drive upgrades, and folks going crazy.

One feature I’d like to see implemented would allow me to plug my iPod into the USB port on the back. 80 gigs on my iPod vs. 40 gigs in the Appletv. Or even access when it’s connected to my library. It’s got to be coming…..

Appletv hacks away

March 26th, 2007

With the AppleTV seeming to hit the world last Thursday (mine for work, too), there’s hacks a plenty within just a few short days.

A nice guide via Tutorial Ninjas.

Appletvhacks.net is another one with a good bit of information.

I’m running it through a boring, 480i LCD TV, so it’s not the preferred experience. I have to say it looks pretty decent for digital content that’s normally on my iPod. I haven’t ripped a DVD yet, maybe tomorrow.

We gave it a test while this afternoon via HDMI 720p. Better than at 480i, quite a bit better – but not earth shattering.

The National Geographic “Wild Chronicles” video podcasts do look beautiful.

[update] add to the list AppleTV Hacker.

CoverScout

March 15th, 2007

CoverscoutOn Mr. Steele’s tip, I went ahead and bought CoverScout. Pretty slick so far. I’m sure it will get even more powerful if I crack open the docs.

One interesting feature tells you how many albums you have, and how many have art. 3115 albums, but only 530 with art. Yikes. I knew it was going to be bad….

Christmas 2.0 = Macworld

January 9th, 2007

Along with the rest of the Mac heads that couldn’t be at Macworld for the keynote today, I’m keeping up with Macrumorslive. My shopping list is growing pretty quickly. I’m very interested in the Apple TV (especially if I could get it to work with DVArchive and my ReplayTV), and the wide screen iPod.

I can’t wait to see the keynote as a stream later today (or in the morning), as well as all the blog recaps from folks actually there.

[update] – the widescreen iPod is only with the iPhone. I guess I’ll wait for the stand alone with more than 8 gigs of storage… And time to get on an HDTV, so I have something to support the Apple TV.

Next-Episode says I didn’t miss CSI Miami last night

December 5th, 2006

I’ve got a few shows that I keep up with and CSI Miami is one of them. Now, I’m not a David Caruso fan (the voice and the sneer…), but I do watch. I was already recording the two-hour special of “The Closer” and catching up on a few other tv shows.

Did I miss a new episode? Nope according to Next-Episode.

Thanks for the RSS to the audio files

October 30th, 2006

Over the last few days I’ve been following the talk around Odeo and Evan Williams candid talk around what went wrong. Lot’s of good points, to be thought about.

A number of posts referred back to a presentation at The Future of Web Apps 2006.

All these great speakers and individual audio files. Nice – RSS feed. Even if only a temporary feed (for me), it’s so much easier dropping the file into NetNewsWire and hitting the “download to iTunes” button on each post. Put right where I want it. Well, among the other 2000 directories in the root of my library.

Evan’s talk for my ride to work in the morning.
