Watch your metadata – they’ll find you

February 27th, 2006

I came across the following washingtonpost.com article that talks about a hacker being interviewed on the condition of anonymity, only to be tracked down via the metadata on the photographer’s images that were used in the story.

Leave it to the slashdot crowd to hunt him down via googlemaps.com.

Crashed the ATM – OS2/Warp?

February 23rd, 2006

A couple days back I stopped by my local ATM to get a little quick cash on the way home. Insert my card, enter PIN, go for the Fast Cash option only to see the machine appear to hang. I did get my card back before the crash, but I stuck around for a minute or two to watch the reboot.

Beautiful splash screen for OS2/Warp. Does that really make me feel anymore secure with my ATM transactions?

$77.00 XM Subscription fee

February 21st, 2006

My new Element has the free XM trial and I love it. I’m now a little over a month in and pretty well hooked. I’ve read about waiting until the end of the trial and holding out for a reduced price.

$77.00 (or starting here) looks to be the spot folks are hitting. I can live with that.

Like Snatch – how about the Hustle?

February 21st, 2006

I seem to have gotten some sort of bug that has me watching more UK based (inspired?) tv.

First it was Mile High on BBC America. I’ve got the DVR set to keep the latest episode around.

Being a sucker for criminal type content, I’ve watched Layer Cake a number of times, re-watched Snatch over the weekend. Somewhere I saw a commercial for Hustle on AMC. It was enough to get a bit of interest, record a couple episodes and see what it’s all about.

I’m only one episode in, but the DVR is set to record the latest episode in the off hours. Earlier this week was a Hustle marathon, so there’s about 5 more episodes to catch up with.

I have to say that I’m happy to see better content coming from some of the cable channels – FX, Bravo, IFC, Sundance, and now AMC.

The best part of the cable channels delivering decent programming is that they tend to replay the shows multiple times which makes it a breeze to record outside the prime time hours.

last.fm

February 9th, 2006

Many months later I’ve finally started to get myself set up with last.fm. I’ve been checking out Chad’s charts for quite some time, just never got around to setting it all up.

Well, I’m now set up. My charts. Recent tracks.

Comment spam…..

February 9th, 2006

Damn. That only took about 18 hours before the spam appeared in the comments.

Last night I was poking around the WP options and I deselected “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”. I can probably count the readers that would comment (let alone read anything here) on one hand, so maybe this would make their life a little easier.

At least it hit the moderate queue.

Full text RSS feeds

February 6th, 2006

Sorry for resetting all previous postings to new. That’s the price we pay in switching from excerpts to the full text in the feed. I have no ads, and probably no readers, so what’s the difference.

If it’s good enough for the Evil Genius, it’s good enough for me.

Farm Blogging–a.k.a. Flogging?

February 4th, 2006

The New Farm’s Dan Sullivan writes about the connection between small scale farming and customers. In “Broadcast your bliss” farmer’s blogs are closing the loop on really knowing where you food is coming from and creating an emotional connection with the farmers.

Kate Newkisk notes:

The motivation for starting the blog, Winslow says, “was to give our customers an idea of the trials, tribulations and triumphs of farming.”

“Being that it is part of the CSA ordering, at pick-up time there are usually many comments about how the week has gone from sympathy to hurrahs! I guess that means the blog allows them to get emotionally involved.”

Support your local farmers.
