Another $15M for Podshow, ugh….

September 29th, 2006

We knew they would only grow and grow, but damn. Now it would be nice to see something come back to the community in a positive way, instead of the opposite direction. Where’s the money going?

Audio and VideoCasting heats up with $15 million to Podshow:

Congrats to PodTech competitors Podshow, who just got $15 million in a second round of VC financing, John Furrier learned. Can’t wait to see Adam Curry and team at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo (I’ll be traveling down there this afternoon, drop me a line if you wanna get together. My cell phone is always on my blog — over there on the right side. No, down lower.)

Looks like things are going to get even more interesting in the new media world.

UPDATE: more info on this story over on TechMeme.

Slingbox edging towards the Mac…

September 28th, 2006

We’re getting closer and closer everyday.

New Slingbox supports Mac OS X, Symbian – but where’s the software?:

It’s time to check in again on the Slingbox’s journey to Mac OS X, as Dave Zatz pinged us with some more details and a purty picture he took off one of the new Slingbox AV models at Best Buy. Turns out there are going to be three new models – Tuner, AV and Pro. Tuner ($150) goes the bare bones route for regular cable or antenna, AV ($180)can interact with a set top box, and Pro ($250) is the One to Rule Them All[TM] with support for multiple feeds and that hot new ‘HD’ thing the internets keep talking about.

The interesting thing, as you can see, is that these new models list support for Mac OS X (as well as Symbian) right on the box, but as we learned a couple weeks ago, the company is still in the middle of a private beta of their SlingPlayer software for the Mac – nothing is public yet. So for now, it sounds like they’re cranking out these boxes without actually having any way for John Doe Mac user to work with them, though after an update over on Dave Zatz’s original story, we might have a public beta of the software very soon.

If any of you rush out to grab one of these, feel free to let us know if there are some wires mixed here and Mac OS X software actually is shipping in the box. Read

iPod manual updating vs. automatic

September 25th, 2006

So I got one of the new 80 gig models and thought I would give a try to letting the iPod sync with my playlists automatically. Big mistake.

I’m on my 4th or 5th iPod (starting with a 10 gig click-wheel), and I’ve always done the manage playlists manually and never really thought twice about it. Now I know why I’ve gone that route.

My set up has my home machine with my library (upwards of 220 gigs) and podcast subscriptions, and I sync from there. I take my iPod with me to work, then plug it into my laptop at work. Going the automatic way was a surprise when I plugged it into the laptop and everything was locked and grayed out. Hmm, I don’t like this.

Back home and now going the manual route. At least I have all these playlists to copy to the iPod. Damn, it’s a pain to go one by one and copy the playlists to the iPod. Too bad you can’t grab more than one playlist at a time.

Once I finish with the music, I’ve got to get all those episodes of Arrested Development on here.

I will leave all my podcasts in the auto updating set up, though. It’s worked well in the past. Granted these are video podcasts, and the Gillmor Gang (still listening and fast forwarding through the ads). The bulk of my audio podcasts still come in via NetNewsWire, then to iTunes, and finally into a manually updated podcast playlist on the iPod.

Pre-travel media planning

September 18th, 2006

I’ve got one of the new, larger iPods coming in the next few days and a trip to the west coast next week, which means I’ll have some time on my hands in the air and airports, as long as portable media devices are still allowed.

It seems that about a week before a trip, I start thinking about the media for the trip. I’m about half way through with Season 1 of Lost (on the tube) but I also have them ripped in mp4 for the PSP or iPod, so I can keep going. Add to that the first two seasons of Arrested Development ripped and ready. That’s a decent back up plan.

A while ago I stumbled onto ReplayToGo and failed to get it working. There’s probably something important in the guide that I didn’t read. ReplayToGo works with MPEG Streamclip, which in itself is nice to have.

After getting the files in the right locations and working, the flow is pretty nice.

Now to automate the download and convert process with the two. If I remember, this where I ended last time. Turned out to be a permissions issue.

Success. This is getting better and better.

I prefer video on the PSP (and the battery life), but I’ll have the storage of the iPod. If they could only talk to each other…..

Captured by my portable tape recorder in 1984

September 7th, 2006

I’ve been subscribed to Scar Stuff for quite a while watching the old records that are getting ripped and posted. It wasn’t until I saw the post listing all the previous content did it really set in. What a great collection.

There are scary tunes, novelty tunes, and just wierdness from the past, but then I came across some vintage Naked Raygun “Live At The VFW#18 in KC, MO Aug 11, 1984” and Butthole Surfers “Live At The VFW#18 in KC, MO Oct 31, 1984“.

Nice.

Feeds o’ cleanin’

September 6th, 2006

The time has been way over due. Way, way over due. My feeds are out of control.

I’ve been avoiding this for months, hoping for some sort of easy solution for organizing my feeds. More than 800 on my laptop, and better than 400 on my home machine. Not all these are worth keeping up with on a daily basis or even weekly. Nearly half the feeds on my home machine are podcast subscriptions that really only feed iTunes, and more than 100 on my laptop that are just podcast subscriptions which I manually download any updates if I need some content outside of my morning sync. I’m willing to bet that more than half on my home machine are duplicated on my laptop.

I’ve started with the laptop and already gone from over 800 feeds, down to 686 and a lot of organization done. Once I get my laptop in order, I’ll import the subscriptions from my home machine, add them one by one, and have a nice base line to grow from.

Feeds have replaced my browser bookmarks (but I do use del.icio.us) so it’s pretty easy to see how things have gotten out of control. Just like the 90’s when our bookmarks file spun out of control, now the chaos has moved to our aggregators – or at least mine.

Better rate? All you have to do is ask.

September 6th, 2006

I’m still a subscriber to the local, Atlanta newspaper and got the notice to renew for another year. If I went off the form and just sent it back, the yearly rate is $223. A few years back I used to buy my subscription from incoming students selling the paper, since they always had a better rate.

Over the last few years I’m not in as close of contact to the students, so I figured I might as well call customer service and ask if they were running any specials. Lo and behold, they did have a better rate. A little over $100 cheaper for making a phone call and asking. The same method worked last year, as well.

While the newspaper is of a dying breed, there is still something about having the paper at the end of the driveway each morning. We’ve got news coming at us in every direction, but I still enjoy reading the paper with my morning cup of coffee.

Bottom line is that you never know if there’s a discount unless you ask….

Flickr News?

September 5th, 2006

John Battelle brings up another great idea (if it’s not already being worked on).

I know Kosso put together a mashup during the London Bombings which did a great job of harvesting the latest images during the crisis into a stream of images.

Random Idea/Question: Flickr News?:

Flickr Logo Gamma.Gif.V1
I am new to Flickr, and have not used it enough to avoid asking stupid questions. But Jeremy’s recent post about Burning Man made me wonder. Is there a place where the news is organized via flickr? I’d love to see a site that takes top headlines and showcases them via Flickr.

Now, I’m not talking about Top CNN headlines, but rather, top news events that might be big on a site like Flickr. Like Burning Man, or MacWorld, or Web 2.0, or Katrina (that was huge as I recall). I’d love a Flickr front page of news related shots, edited by someone who had a news editor’s sensibility. Does it exist and I’m just a moron? Man, I’d love to check that page everyday.

I would love to see something similar happening with podcasts, too – be they audio or video.
