Over the last few days I’ve been following the talk around Odeo and Evan Williams candid talk around what went wrong. Lot’s of good points, to be thought about.
A number of posts referred back to a presentation at The Future of Web Apps 2006.
All these great speakers and individual audio files. Nice – RSS feed. Even if only a temporary feed (for me), it’s so much easier dropping the file into NetNewsWire and hitting the “download to iTunes” button on each post. Put right where I want it. Well, among the other 2000 directories in the root of my library.
Evan’s talk for my ride to work in the morning.

Ah, yes.
A nice surprise to see that Jason’s blog is now flowing into NNW.

I haven’t had a chance to give this a listen, but after the lengthy wait, The Naked Chef’s got his podcast (iTunes or RSS), out.
It’s a shame that with the site redesign, all the old feeds died without any notice. Out with the old, in with the new.

Via Eric Rice comes this tidbit….
The Podshow betting pool/kinda-dead pool:
There’s a quietly-kept, not-blogged-about betting pool about which shows or podcasters would be the ones to bail from the Podshow limo– those that Have Had Enough Of This. People who’ve been on the list for a while now are folks like Dawn and Drew, Steve Gilmor, Madge Weinstein, etc. It’s like a dead pool, but not in the sense that they will die, but they’ll escape.
I just read a report on Geoghagen’s site that MommyCast splits from Podshow.
Wow, I didn’t see that one at all and someone undoubtedly scored high in the betting pool.
I have to say that I’m not surprised to see talent leaving the Podshow circus. I wonder how much of the talent is under contract for more than one year? Within the podcast ecosystem, has Podshow really moved us forward?
If anything, Podshow is providing a public experiment on how to get money, acquire talent, stir up a community, and make mistakes along the way.

In the midst of the upgrade process with the new iMac, I’ve also decided to give the Comcast cable modem a shot for the same money I’ve been giving Earthlink for DSL.
Speed test with Earthlink
And now Comcast
I think I know where I’ll stay……
And with the speed also comes an NHL game a night streamed live.

I ordered one of the new 24″ iMacs last week planning for delivery this week. Well, it arrived yesterday morning and it’s still in the box.
With the new machine, comes all sorts of changes to the home set up. Out with the dual 1.25 GHrz G4 and 17″ LCD (moving across the office to my wife’s Cube). Add to the mix that I’ve also got the 8 Mbit set up (done on Monday) from Comcast (wireless from the living room) to replace Earthlink’s DSL (wired into the office).
No need to come out of the box and packing materials until everything starts to come back together.
I’m also moving around a bunch of hard drives and shopping for a network appliance to add to the network.
There’s nothing like shutting down all the machines, unplugging all the cables, and then starting over from scratch.

Jeez, so out of the 5 parts to the last episode (Backwards Gang), I’ve gotten 1, 2 and 5 – automatically through iTunes. Can’t seem to pull down 3 and 4. Now I just get an error.
Head to Google to find the show page on Podshow and the first url is:
Not very useful. And even Podshow.com is coming back as:
I really want to drop the Gillmor Gang from my usual listening pleasure, but something in the back of my mind hopes they will improve.
More than $20 million in the bank, and we’re putting up with this.
[update] – looks like things are back to, uh, normal. Now the missing two portions of the GG appear to be corrupt…

A couple nights ago I was in a rush to leave work, pick up some take out, eat dinner, then get back out of the house for the 45 minute drive into Buckhead to see DJ Shadow. Doors opened at 8, with the opener (Lateef, The Truth Speaker) hitting the stage about 8:15.
On my way home, I stopped by Figo Pasta to get some take out. In the parking lot, a guy comes up and asks if he can ask me some questions. Sure thing.
Turns out it was Patrik Jonsson from the Christian Science Monitor comparing eating out to eating at home. A pretty good write up, even if the quotes aren’t quite right.
Have a read.
For not that much more, Americans opting to eat out

I’ve been having some troubles with Jason’s feed and NNW. Without the feed, it’s difficult to remember to keep up with checking Calacanis.com routinely.
I’m not seeing any errors in NNW error log, but when I view the XML source from NNW’s perspective, there’s some excess code that starts the file.
<br />
<b>Notice</b>: Undefined index: HTTP_ACCEPT in <b>/export/alpha/www/com/s/calacanis/index.php</b> on line <b>33</b><br />
The XML appears to be well formed, but there’s clearly something amiss, and not enough time to dig deeper.
I do appreciate the value of Jason on the Gillmor Gang, but that’s only weekly, and then I’ve got to fast forward through the 4:30 minutes of junk before I get to 20 minutes of content. Add to that, there’s multiple parts of each Gang, with the last one (The Mid-Tail Gang) having 5 parts. More than 20 minutes of ISP commercials and discount codes… More fuel for the Podshow fire. But still subscribed and hoping for change.

There’s a lot of great information coming out of the Portable Media Expo this year and here’s a few points over the weekend that jumped out.
Podshow spending some of the $15 million on a stretch Hummer to move people to their un-conference deal…
Thursday
Podcast Academy 4:
Friday:
- Dave Slusher from Evil Genius Chronicles. When he speaks, I’m there. Great follow up from Scott with Podcheck Review
- FInding that other gatherings at the DoubleTree Hotel include, the Chicano Correctional Workers Association, Canon Illusionists gathering, various sports notables in town for the 2006 Mark Christopher Charity Classic. Lawrence Taylor in the bar.
- Michael Jordan getting bumped from the Presidential Suite for the LibSyn party. Word is he was in there watching tv.
- The line at In-n-Out burger, and proof I was there
- Talking Minneapolis with Garrick Van Burnen
- An enthusiastic conversation about iTunes not centered around the C&D’s, but OPML?….. We figured the discussion was enthusiastic enough that Dave woke up from a deep sleep, even if he wasn’t there.
Saturday
- L.T. at breakfast by himself, and another table that were some other sports stars including Eric Munoz…
- Andrew Barton and Joanne Conlan from Rocketboom.
- In-n-Out, again. Anything is better than the convention center food, and this is worth the walk.
- Kris with Palegroove Studios gave the most honest, non sales pitch presentation on podcast consulting. He shared real world numbers, which is rare in this day and age. More power to you.
Shout out to all those that I met for the first time, and those renewed acquaintances: Kosso (podcast.com), Duncan (podcast.com), Scott, Pete, Esmee (Deloitte), Dave (Evil Genius Chronicles), Ewan (in the kilt, of course), Garrick (First Crack Podcast), Kris (Palegroove), Eric Rice, Craig Syverson (VideoGrunt), Rick (Feedburner) Greg Cangialosi, Doug (Gigavox), Michael (Gigavox), and more, I’m sure.
Where was Odeo?
We missed Mike. Maybe next year. I can’t believe you and the Evil Genius have yet to meet in person.
