Appletv hacks away

March 26th, 2007

With the AppleTV seeming to hit the world last Thursday (mine for work, too), there’s hacks a plenty within just a few short days.

A nice guide via Tutorial Ninjas.

Appletvhacks.net is another one with a good bit of information.

I’m running it through a boring, 480i LCD TV, so it’s not the preferred experience. I have to say it looks pretty decent for digital content that’s normally on my iPod. I haven’t ripped a DVD yet, maybe tomorrow.

We gave it a test while this afternoon via HDMI 720p. Better than at 480i, quite a bit better – but not earth shattering.

The National Geographic “Wild Chronicles” video podcasts do look beautiful.

[update] add to the list AppleTV Hacker.

CoverScout update

March 19th, 2007

After buying CoverScout and only having a little more than 500 albums with art I was pretty worried. As it is, I leave it on one of my screens and try to add a cover or more in each sitting. So far, I’m at 3091 without art, but 1006 with art. Handy little feature grabbed all the art stashed in the iTunes Album artwork folders and that probably got me another few hundred. I think the easy part is over and now it’s just a lot of the built in search.

$20 well spent, so far.

CoverScout

March 15th, 2007

CoverscoutOn Mr. Steele’s tip, I went ahead and bought CoverScout. Pretty slick so far. I’m sure it will get even more powerful if I crack open the docs.

One interesting feature tells you how many albums you have, and how many have art. 3115 albums, but only 530 with art. Yikes. I knew it was going to be bad….

The hunt for album art…..

March 14th, 2007

So I’ve got an iTunes library hitting better than 17,000 tracks. There’s podcasts, videos, movies, and a ton of music without album art. A lot of the tracks that are an hour or more in length. And yeah, iTunes doesn’t (or will never) have artwork for most of this stuff.

I finally decided it was worth trying to take some advantage of Cover Flow, but with only about half the library having any art, it’s not too pretty.

I found art to work with a group of nearly 500 tracks. iTunes is still chewing away after more than an hour. At least it’s a step in making the iTunes display prettier.

It’ll be interesting to see if I make it all the way through my library….
