iPhone and iTunes urls

July 11th, 2007

It sure would be nice if when you clicked that called out to the iTunes music store, the iPhone would remember the link (like – http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=88395834) and next time you sync’d the iPhone with iTunes, you would be asked if you wanted to subscribe (or even better, buy).

Instead you get a nice message that says “Please use iTunes on your computer to access the iTunes Store.”

Mobile iTunes can’t be far off.

iTunes maintenance thanks to the 7.3 update

July 8th, 2007

First, I was having some issues where iTunes would stop downloading podcasts, and it was forcing me to restart to clear things up and start downloading, again. That’s been going on for a new weeks and getting to be more and more of a pain (a daily occurrence).

Next came the update last week to 7.3 (for the iPhone). As with most updates, just do them. Well, this time the update resulted in a nice error not being able to save the library file (error type -50). Seems that it’s soemwhat common. Threads on the Apple discussion boards for Mac upgrades and Windows upgrades. Windows users hit harder?

After a week of watching for a released update (not seeing one), being very gentle and not restarting iTunes, and only downloading podcasts manually, I’ve given up waiting.

First thing I did was to export my podcast subscriptions to an OPML file. Then move the iTunes library file out of the iTunes folder and restart with an empty library. I’ve imported my podcast subscriptions back into iTunes, and added all my music back. Now waiting for iTunes to determine gapless playback on more than 17,000 tracks, it’s taking a while.

With the podcasts, I did notice that a number of titles have multiple subscriptions. Clean those up. Couldn’t hurt.

What have I lost in this change:

  • Any existing playlists. Not that big of deal for me.
  • Any existing smart playlists. Still not a huge deal, with about 6 to recreate.
  • Play counts – no worries, I don’t use that.
  • Preferences on my iPod – I manually add music, but auotsync podcasts, so now my smart playlists are mucked up with lot’s of recently added podcasts.
  • Preferences on my iPhone. Erase and resync library.

If this clears up the bug and gets me back to my normal iTunes usage, it’s all good.
